When we look at a screen, we blink less often, sometimes up to half as much. That is how dryness, a gritty feeling, and end-of-day visual fatigue set in.

The 20-20-20 rule

Every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet (6 metres) away for 20 seconds. This gives your eyes a brief rest.

Other helpful habits

  • Position the screen slightly below eye level, about an arm’s length away.
  • Adjust screen brightness to match the room.
  • Blink consciously and, if needed, use artificial tears.

If discomfort persists despite these measures, a consultation can rule out an uncorrected refractive problem or dry eye that needs treatment.
